Preguntas frecuentes sobre Blue Lagoon
How does Blue Lagoon treatment work in pool water?
The Blue Lagoon system disinfects water by emitting ultraviolet C radiation at a wavelength of 253.7 nanometers inside its stainless steel chamber. As water flows through, propelled by the pump, this light penetrates directly into the cell nuclei of bacteria, fungi, and microalgae, destroying their DNA structure and immediately preventing them from reproducing.
Unlike purely chemical treatments, this photochemical action actively breaks down chloramines, which cause unpleasant odors and eye irritation. To closely monitor sanitary conditions after UV disinfection, we recommend measuring residual levels using the Lovibond MD200 3-in-1 photometer for chlorine, pH, and cyanuric acid.
I have a 50-cubic-meter pool and want to reduce chemical use. Which Blue Lagoon unit should I install, and what real savings can I expect?
A Blue Lagoon reactor with a 75W or higher lamp provides the germicidal dose needed to effectively treat a 50-cubic-meter pool during normal filtration cycles. Ultraviolet radiation provides primary disinfection, reducing the need for traditional chlorine disinfectants by 50% to 80% throughout the 2026 swimming season.
To ensure complementary disinfection and maintain an active residual in the pool, a small supplemental dose of Quimiclor PS 5 Effects Quimicamp 5 kg – 250 g tablets (multi-action chlorine) placed in a skimmer or dispenser is enough. This prevents algae from growing in areas with low recirculation while keeping the water completely clear.
How often should the Blue Lagoon ultraviolet lamp be replaced?
The Blue Lagoon germicidal lamp should be replaced after 9,000 hours of continuous operation to ensure effective ultraviolet radiation. Although the tube may remain lit and emit visible blue light beyond that period, its specific emission at 253.7 nanometers declines significantly, reducing its ability to destroy viruses and pathogenic microorganisms.
Regular preventive maintenance requires following these guidelines:
- Replace the UV-C quartz bulb every two seasons in private residential pools or annually with intensive use.
- Carefully clean the outside of the quartz sleeve with an acidic descaler if the water has excessive limescale.
- Check the O-ring seals to prevent leaks into the electrical ballast.
I’ve been recommended salt chlorination, but I’m concerned about corrosion of the fittings. Is installing Blue Lagoon or electrolysis a better option?
Blue Lagoon ultraviolet technology provides complete disinfection without increasing the water’s conductivity or salinity, eliminating the risk of corrosion to ladders, steel handrails, and pumps. Electrolysis systems generate hypochlorite from dissolved salts, which can be aggressive to vulnerable metals, while UV-C radiation works in a closed circuit without altering the water’s basic chemistry.
Both alternatives have clearly distinct technical characteristics:
- Blue Lagoon immediately destroys chloramines and neutralizes pathogens without adding saline byproducts or wearing down mounting components.
- Salt chlorination requires periodically adding bags of salt and monitoring electrodes prone to limescale buildup.
- Combining UV-C with low-salinity salt chlorination is the most hygienic standard for indoor pools and heated spas.
Where in the filtration circuit is the Blue Lagoon sterilizer installed?
The Blue Lagoon sterilizer is installed in the return pipe leading to the inlets, always after the sand filter and the heating system or heat pump, if present. This arrangement ensures that the water reaches the reactor free of suspended solid impurities that could cast shadows on the quartz tube and reduce the power of the germicidal radiation beam.
It is highly recommended to install it using a bypass with three pressure-rated PVC shutoff valves. This configuration makes it possible to isolate the AISI 316L stainless steel body to replace the lamp or clean the quartz sleeve without stopping the pool’s main filtration circuit.
I want to fully automate the pool’s physical and chemical treatment alongside Blue Lagoon. Which dosing system guarantees full compatibility?
Any automatic regulation system for pH or liquid disinfectant works perfectly alongside Blue Lagoon systems without operational interference. Since the ultraviolet reactor breaks down microorganisms without adding a persistent disinfectant to the pool, automating the injection of pH corrector and microdoses of liquid chlorine ensures uninterrupted hygienic stability.
For controlled dosing of the chemical corrector without direct manual handling, integrating the Tekna AKS 603 Standard NHP Dosing Pump into the technical setup is ideal. This connection stabilizes the water’s chemical levels, maximizing the UV sterilizer’s light output and preventing cloudiness.
What hydraulic pressure can a Blue Lagoon reactor housing withstand, and what is its maximum flow rate?
Blue Lagoon reactors for residential pools are certified to operate at a maximum pressure of 2 to 3 bar, depending on the model, and are compatible with conventional circulation pumps. Exceeding this limit can compromise the threaded connections and quartz sealing sleeves, so they must never be installed in closed lines without a free return to the pool.
Regarding flow rate, a typical 75 W residential model efficiently processes up to 23 cubic meters per hour for bacterial disinfection. However, to break down chloramines as effectively as possible, it is recommended to regulate the flow to a maximum of 16 cubic meters per hour. Adjusting the speed with control valves ensures the water is exposed to the radiation for the optimal amount of time.
