Pool descalers and cleaners

A pool descaler is formulated to remove certain mineral deposits adhered to surfaces or components of the installation, especially limescale deposits.

Not all stains or deposits have the same origin. Limescale, greasy dirt, certain metals and organic stains may require different products and procedures.

Before applying a descaler, it is advisable to identify the type of deposit and check that the product is compatible with the surface to be treated.

It depends entirely on the product.

Some treatments are formulated for use with water in the pool, while other concentrated descalers are intended for exposed surfaces or specific cleaning procedures.

Do not use a product intended for cleaning an empty pool directly in a full pool unless its instructions expressly permit such use. Always check the application method, dosage and compatibility indicated on the label.

There is no universal frequency.

Scale formation depends on factors such as water hardness and composition, pH, temperature, evaporation and the overall water balance, as well as the characteristics of each installation.

Therefore, it is not necessary to automatically descale the pool shell annually or treat the filter every 3 or 6 months. Use the product when the installation conditions require it and follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

If limescale appears continuously, it is also advisable to review the causes that are promoting its formation.

Limescale deposits usually appear as whitish or greyish deposits adhered to surfaces, although their appearance may vary.

Not all white, brown, green or reddish stains are necessarily limescale. They may also be caused by metal deposits, organic dirt or other coating problems.

Correctly identifying the source is important because a limescale descaler may not be the appropriate treatment for a stain caused by something else.

Only if the product is expressly indicated as compatible with that material.

Liners, polyester or fibreglass coatings, mosaic tiles, grouting and other finishes may react differently to certain cleaners and concentrations.

I would not assume that mosaic tiles are completely resistant to every acidic product, nor would I simply recommend diluting a concentrated descaler for use on a delicate coating.

Check the compatibility indicated by the manufacturer and, where applicable, carry out the treatment by following its instructions exactly.

The application method depends on the formulation and the surface to be cleaned.

Some products may require localised application, dilution or a specific contact time, while others have completely different procedures.

Use the protective measures indicated on the label and safety data sheet and comply with the concentration, contact time and rinsing procedure established by the manufacturer.

I would not recommend spraying, diluting or applying an acidic descaler with a watering can as a universal procedure, as this may be inappropriate or dangerous depending on the product.

Both mineral deposits and grease, sunscreen, oils and other organic residues can accumulate along the waterline.

A descaler may be suitable for certain limescale deposits, while a specific waterline cleaner may be more appropriate for greasy dirt.

Choosing the product according to the type of dirt helps achieve better results and avoids using an unnecessarily aggressive treatment on the coating.

Salt electrolysis cells can accumulate limescale deposits, but they should not automatically be cleaned with acid or with any pool descaler.

Some cells incorporate features designed to reduce deposit formation, and each manufacturer specifies when and how they should be cleaned.

If the cell requires descaling, use only a product and procedure compatible with the model, paying particular attention to the indicated concentration and contact time. Excessive or incorrect chemical cleaning can affect the electrodes and reduce their service life.

Keep the product in its original container, properly closed and labelled, and follow the storage conditions specified by the manufacturer.

Keep products out of the reach of children and animals and separate from chemically incompatible substances. Acidic products require special caution and must never be mixed directly with chlorinated products, as dangerous reactions and the release of toxic gases may occur.

Before handling any descaler, consult its label and safety data sheet and use the indicated protective measures.
