- Capture: Pool water is drawn in through skimmers and drains and then directed toward the filter. At this stage, the filtering element of the pool filter traps the solid particles suspended in the water as it passes through.
- Cleaning: The trapped particles gradually accumulate, and to maintain the filter’s effectiveness, it is necessary to clean the filter regularly. We explain how to do this below!
- Return: Once the filter has been cleaned, the filtered water is returned to the pool, now free of impurities. This process is repeated continuously to maintain the quality of the pool water.

Types of pool filters

Sand filters
Sand filters for pools are the most popular. They work with a tank filled with silica sand, which acts as the filter medium. The water passes through the sand, trapping particles and leaving the water clean. They can treat large quantities of water.
Diatomaceous earth filters
Diatomaceous earth pool filters use a microscopic fossilized filtering agent, an extremely fine natural material. This provides highly efficient filtration, capturing even the smallest particles.
However, they require more thorough maintenance and periodic recharging with diatomaceous earth, but they provide exceptional water filtration.
Cartridge filters
Cartridge filters for pools use cartridges as the filter medium, as their name suggests. The water flows through this medium, where the impurities are retained.
They are ideal for small- to medium-sized pools and above-ground pools. They are also easy to maintain and clean.
Cyclonic filters
The operation of cyclonic pool filters is based on creating a high-speed cyclone that generates centrifugal force, causing the heavier particles to separate from the main flow and collect at the bottom of the device.

How to clean a pool filter: The most common types
Cleaning a pool sand filter
When it comes to cleaning a sand filter, bear in mind that there are two stages: backwashing and rinsing.
To know when it needs cleaning, you should check the filter pressure gauge, which indicates how dirty it is.
Once it indicates that the filter needs cleaning, follow these steps:
- Stop the filtration system and, for safety reasons, disconnect the electrical power before carrying out any work. Then check that the drain valves are open, open the drain and skimmer valves, and set the valve to the filtration position.
- Turn on the pump and let it run for a few minutes to expel the dirty particles from the filter.
- Turn off the pump to complete the 1st stage (backwashing).
- To continue with the 2nd stage, turn the valve to the "Rinse" position.
- Turn on the pump and let it run for a few seconds. This helps clear the water and ensures that no dirt residue remains in the filter that could return to the pool.
- Once you have completed these two stages, return the selector valve to the filtration position.
Cleaning a pool cartridge filter
As with sand filters, pool cartridge filters have a pressure gauge that indicates when cleaning is required. Here are the steps for cleaning this type of filter:
- Before beginning, make sure to turn off the pool pump. This is essential for safety reasons.
- Release the filter pressure so you can remove the lid and take out the cartridge. Once you have it out, check that it is not damaged. If it has any tears, it should be replaced.
- Use a garden hose to rinse the cartridge and make sure it is completely clean.
- Allow the filter to dry thoroughly before putting it back inside the filtration tank.
- Finally, restart the filtration system.
